He opined that the Local Vigilantes across the state had continued to record good results because of the morale boost and support the Governor had continued to give as well as the cooperation from the citizens and synergy between the security operatives. Onogwu noted that the continued efforts of the Kogi State Government to keep the momentum as the safest state in the country were so far yielding remarkable results, noting that the Governor had severally made a commitment to securing the lives and property of the citizens and make the state a no go zone for criminal elements. He reiterated that Governments at all levels would continue to make efforts towards sustaining the drive for a peaceful Kogi state by making every nook and cranny of the state unsafe for criminal elements and their sponsors. In the same vein, security agencies are on the trail of kidnappers who were reported to have carried out attack on certain individuals in Kabba. Extrajudicial killing: Dismissed Police Sergeant gets death sentence

The Sun News - 32 min 39 sec ago

From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa

For the extra-judicial killing of 19-year-old Tarila Nikade along Tenacious road, Yenagoa in 2019, dismissed Police Sergeant, Timade Emmanuel was over the weekend sentenced to death by hanging.

Nikade was an undergraduate student of the state owned Niger Delta University (NDU) and was on a 4.42 CGPA before he was killed.

Bayelsa State High Court 2 presided over by Justice Margaret Ayemieye in a two –count charge of conspiracy to commit murder and murder declared that the prosecution proved that Emmanuel shot the deceased in the back in cold blood.

The human rights committee of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) which formed part of the prosecution team had presented three witnesses to secure the conviction of Emmanuel.

Before his conviction, Emmanuel who was arrested after outrage and protests greeted the killing of Nikade had been subjected to an orderly trial prompting his dismissal from the Police force.

A member of the NBA National Public Interest Litigation Committee, Wisdom Meni Adike who spoke after the conviction of Emmanuel explained that the prosecution of the killer policeman lasted for two years despite the initial attempts by some senior policemen from the State Police Command to frustrate his prosecution and conviction.

He disclosed that in 2019, the Human Right Committee of NBA Sagbama through the then chairman, Dise Sheila Ogbise and the incumbent Chairman, George Ebinyu Aderigha ensured that diligent investigation was conducted over the death of Nikade.

” We immediately went to the scene of the crime. The NBA Sagbama Branch conducted high level investigation because the death of Tarila Nikade created a loud outcry from the general public.”

“The investigation of the murder of Tarila Nikade, was filled with lots of issues including that of conflict of interest where the NBA Sagbama had to fight out with the Nigerian Police Force. The Officer Timade Emmanuel was immediately tried in Orderly Room trial by the Nigerian Police Force and later found guilty and dismissed. We later dragged him to court for murder.”

“At a point, NBA case file was almost hijacked but we insisted on getting copies of all the case files with the police. We also took all the witnesses into protective custody over alleged threats by friends of the culpable policeman. They had no choice but to cooperate with us. Autopsy and witnesses’ account showed he was shot in the back. The deceased boy was a student who was learning barbing during holiday before he was shot dead in cold blood.”

Adike described the verdict of the Court as a victory to all who worked in truth for the true attainment of Justice.

“We are satisfied. We commend the State Ministry of Justice and its counsel who took charge of the matter, the then legal adviser of NBA, Sagbama  now the chairman, Aderigha and the Nikade family for standing strong in the midst of tribulations. Finally, it is a duty we owe ourselves to see that Justice in our society, checks and balances is maintained”.

COVID-19: Edo urges vaccination, compliance with preventive protocols amid rising infections, deaths

Nigerian Observer - 38 min 8 sec ago

BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has urged residents to complement the government’s efforts at containing the COVID-19 pandemic by coming out to get vaccinated against the deadly virus.

The state’s COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi gave the charge while addressing journalists in Benin City at the weekend.

Obi, who decried the rise in the number of infections and deaths in the state, reiterated the need for all citizens to continue to comply with preventive protocols against the spread of the virus in order to remain healthy and protected against the deadly virus.

He noted that it is imperative for all residents to be vaccinated to stay alive and healthy, as more unvaccinated persons continue to die from the virus.

He restated that all persons who have died from the virus in the third wave of the pandemic in the state were unvaccinated, while over 96 percent of confirmed cases are those who were never vaccinated.

According to him, “While the government intensifies efforts to contain the pandemic and ensure the safety of Edo citizens, we charge everyone who has been administered with the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine, to come out for the second dose in order to get full protection against the virus, while others who have not been vaccinated are encouraged to come out and get the vaccination, as the vaccines are safe, free and effective.”

“Also, all citizens must continue to comply with all basic preventive measures including frequent hand washing with soap under running water, avoiding close contacts and ensuring regular use of face masks,” Obi charged.

Unilag crisis: Visitation panel report indicted Babalakin-FG

The Sun News - 38 min 12 sec ago

From Fred Ezeh, Abuja

Federal Government has maintained that the erstwhile Chairman of the governing council of the University of Lagos (Unilag), Dr. Wale Babalakin, was indicted in the report of the seven-man presidential visitation panel to the institution. The presidential visitation panel was constituted by the President, Muhammadu Buhari, to unravel the true cause of administrative crisis in the University and the face-off between the former governing council led by Babalakin and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, which led to the unlawful suspension of the Vice Chancellor by the Dr. Babalakin led governing council. Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Bem Goong, in a statement on Sunday accused Babalakin of sponsoring media reports that are not correct, thus misleading and misinforming the public. He said: “The attention of the Federal Ministry of Education has been drawn to several syndicated publications in the media insinuating among other things that the presidential visitation panel to the University of Lagos indicted the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ogundipe and the management of the University.  The stories also posited that the report exonerated the former Chairman of Council, Dr. Wale Babalakin. That is not correct. “The Ministry wishes to state in very categorical terms that these claims are false, unfounded, and to say the least, mischievous, as they have no bearing with the report submitted by the panel which was chaired by a reputable retired Army General, Martin Luther Agwai, one of the finest Officers of the Nigerian Army.” He recalled that the seven-man presidential visitation panel to the University of Lagos submitted its report alongside other panels to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu on 31st August, 2021, and government is in the process of setting up White Paper Committees to address all the findings and recommendations of the Panels, including that of UniLag in a holistic manner. He equally recalled that government had earlier issued a White Paper on the report of the 2020 Special Presidential Visitation Panel to the University of Lagos which culminated in the dissolution of the former Governing Council and the reinstatement of the Vice Chancellor. He, thus, advised stakeholders and Nigerians to ignore in totality, the false, malicious and self-serving publications as well as their orchestration on social and electronic media while await the formal release of the government white paper on the panel’s reports.
